Long review

My family and I were back to Mercure Goulburn, a 4-star hotel in Goulburn, in December 2020. My previous stay can be read here. During check-in, I was requested to fill in a short questionnaire related to COVID-19, which, I believe, is a requirement from the NSW Government. Other than this, check-in was quick and smooth since the hotel was ready for our arrival. The layout of the hotel is like a motel, where guests can park their cars in front of their respective rooms.

Our room is a 1-bedroom apartment with 1 queen and 3 single beds. The apartment is very spacious, probably around 70 sqm. The queen bed, dining table, sofa, kitchenette, and a TV are located in the main room, which is the space that we first entered when we accessed the unit. The kitchenette was well equipped with cooking and eating utensils. It also includes an oven, a cooktop, a fairly large fridge, and a microwave oven. This facility was indeed handy during our stay.

The 3 single beds are placed in a separate room along with the wardrobe, a desk, and another TV. A tower and a bar shop were placed neatly at the foot of each single bed.

The bathroom is again large. It does not have a bathtub, but the shower is spacious. The bathroom is also equipped with double sinks, which is a rarity in a hotel.

On the dining table, the hotel gave us some welcome gifts, including 2 bottles of water, slippers, and a small bottle of white wine (sauvignon blanc). The bottle of wine is a welcome surprise indeed. I must also add that the wi-fi was free, and it was fast and stable.

In the front of each room, the hotel provides a bench and an ashtray for smoking. Probably this is common for this motel-like hotel layout and I can understand the necessity. One of our neighbours was a smoker though and the smell of smoke penetrated our room at times.

Since there are no other facilities, such as gym and pool, let’s briefly review the location of the hotel. Mercure Goulburn is located about 4 or 5 km from the city centre, which is relatively far given that this is a regional town. The Big Merino, a giant 15-metre sheep statue, is only about 100 metres from the hotel. Built in 1985, it is a monument to Goulburn and the surrounding district’s fine wool industry. Next to the statue, there is a gift shop and an exhibition depicting the 200-year history of wool in Australia.

There are several fast-food outlets around the hotel, including McDonald’s, KFC, and Red Rooster. I also saw a kebab shop and an Indian restaurant next door. The most famous one is the Trappers Bakery, a bakery with 50 years of rich local history. More information about the bakery is available here.

It’s good to be back and experience another enjoyable stay in this hotel. We plan to come back here again in the near future.
