Flying Garuda Indonesia in business class on the short hop from Bali to Surabaya was a pleasant experience. The flight itself lasted barely an hour, yet the premium ground experience at the Ngurah Rai International Airport elevated the overall journey considerably. This was certainly the case on GA349, where the combination of a surprisingly pleasant lounge, warm service, and an excellent meal created an enjoyable experience that exceeded the practical expectations of such a short domestic sector.

Check‑in took place at Garuda Indonesia’s dedicated premium area, where the process was impressively swift and well organised. Within a matter of minutes, our bags were tagged, boarding passes issued, and we were on our way. From there, we breezed through security without delay and made our way directly to the lounge, setting a relaxed tone for the journey ahead.

Premium check-in area

The Garuda Indonesia Lounge in Bali’s domestic terminal was reasonably nice. It was certainly one of the more enjoyable spaces in the airport for a brief pre‑flight pause. Spread across two floors, it had a calm and quiet atmosphere with plenty of seating and a design that reflects the warm tones of modern Indonesian interiors. The food offerings are the lounge’s strongest point, with a generous buffet of Indonesian and Western dishes, ranging from noodles and rice dishes to pastries, cakes, and snacks, all of which were beautifully presented and replenished frequently.

The broader amenities, including fast complimentary Wi‑Fi and an outdoor area uncommon in airport lounges, provide welcome variety. Travellers also appreciate small conveniences such as showers, television areas and relatively uncrowded seating. Upstairs, two massage chairs were available, providing a welcome opportunity to relax while waiting for boarding. There was also a small children’s corner; however, it felt rather underwhelming, with only a minimal selection of toys and limited activities to keep young travellers engaged. Altogether, it is a lounge that consistently performs above average for a domestic terminal.

Boarding the Boeing 737 for this short hop revealed a straightforward business‑class cabin. The cabin featured twelve recliner seats arranged in a 2‑2 configuration, offering sufficient comfort for a flight of this duration. A bottled water had already been placed at each seat before passengers boarded, and shortly after settling in, the crew offered welcome drinks and a packet of mixed nuts along with a warm face towel, a thoughtful pre‑departure touch. The inflight entertainment system reflected the practical nature of the service. While a selection of movies was available, the flight duration was so brief that there was little time to watch any of them.

Ready to take-off

Where Garuda Indonesia continues to shine is in service. The crew were warm, courteous and attentive from the moment passengers boarded, embodying the gracious hospitality the airline is known for. Even with a modest delay of around fifteen minutes, the atmosphere never felt rushed; instead, the crew maintained a calm, assured presence that added a welcome sense of ease to an otherwise short and functional flight.

Despite the extremely short flight time, Garuda Indonesia managed to serve an impressively substantial refreshment. Each business‑class passenger received a neatly presented food box containing a bottled water, stuffed tofu with chilli, a packet of mixed nuts, and a tiramisu bar. The tofu, in particular, was unexpectedly delicious. The entire box was served on a crisp white tablecloth shortly after take‑off, adding a touch of elegance to an otherwise brief sector. Garuda’s ability to deliver something flavourful, satisfying and thoughtfully presented on such a short route continues to distinguish it from many other carriers operating comparable domestic flights.

Refreshments on board

As expected, business‑class passengers were invited to disembark first, allowing for a swift and orderly exit from the aircraft. We made our way directly to the baggage claim area, where our luggage appeared within five minutes—an impressively efficient end to a short yet well‑executed journey.

Overall, GA349 delivers exactly what a premium domestic service should: smooth, friendly and efficient travel wrapped in small refinements that make the journey feel special. The lounge experience in Bali was particularly strong and set a positive tone before boarding. While the seat and entertainment were entirely standard, the excellent service and surprisingly robust meal elevated the short flight into a genuinely enjoyable experience.
