My family and I stayed for four nights in a Queen & Queen Superior room at Mercure Canberra Belconnen. We arrived by car and initially parked in the five-minute zone outside the hotel lobby for check-in. The process was quick, although I was refused an extra room key card, which is unusual for a family booking. The check-in staff said that the hotel did not have an extra card, which was an illogical reason. I felt annoyed, but I let it go. I managed to obtain the additional key the following morning before breakfast. After checking in, I moved the car to the secure undercover parking within the hotel building, which was both convenient and spacious.

The hotel sits in the heart of Belconnen, just 8 km from Canberra’s CBD, and within easy walking distance of Westfield Belconnen and the University of Canberra. It’s also connected to the Canberra Labor Club.
The Queen & Queen Superior room was generously sized at around 31 m², modern in design, and thoughtfully appointed. It had two comfortable queen beds, a smart TV with Chromecast, complimentary Wi‑Fi, and a practical table that worked well as a workspace. The room was quiet at night, and the beds were pleasantly firm. Combined with a wide selection of pillows, these amenities ensured restful sleep. The abstract artwork behind the beds can be illuminated, creating a unique and quirky focal point in the room.

The welcome gifts were a nice touch, comprising two bottles of mineral water, a bottle of white wine, and two chocolate cookies.

From the window, I enjoyed a glimpse of Canberra’s landscape in the distance, adding a pleasant backdrop to the stay.

The bathroom was spacious and clean, featuring a shower on the left, a separate toilet with its own door on the right, and a vanity basin positioned centrally.

Breakfast was a classic Australian buffet served in the adjoining Canberra Labor Club, a venue with a distinctly retro feel. The spread included familiar favourites such as scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, roasted tomatoes, baked beans, toast, pastries, yoghurt, and fresh fruit. Guests could also order eggs cooked to their preference, which was a welcome option. Drinks, including a self-service coffee machine, were available on the opposite side of the room. The selection was unchanged throughout our four-day stay, which made it feel repetitive. Nevertheless, the offering was adequate for a mid-range hotel experience. On a side note, I believe the Accor Plus dining discount was only available for breakfast in this hotel.

The hotel offers a compact yet reasonably well-equipped gym, though it does not have a swimming pool. Additional amenities include a bar and an entertainment centre within the adjoining Canberra Labor Club. Guests also have access to a laundry facility and EV charging stations.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, thanks largely to the comfortable room and the hotel’s ideal location. Breakfast, however, could benefit from a refresh to add more variety. See a video of the hotel below.
