Long review
Singapore Airlines (SQ232) was scheduled to depart Sydney at 11:00 and to arrive in Singapore at 17:30, with a total flight duration of 8.5 hours. My family and I arrived at the airport about 2.5 hours before the departure time. Check-in was quick and easy. Clearing security and customs was not bad either. From there, we immediately went to the Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge.
Business class lounge is to the left of the front desk, while first class or suite class passengers can access the first class lounge hidden behind a wall to the right. The lounge is reasonably spacious. The floor-to-ceiling windows at the end of the lounge provides a good view of the tarmac. The lounge was quite busy, although there was still a good number of seats available. There are also different types of seating area available, including those for relaxing or lounging, dining, and working. The fast Wi-Fi was very useful, especially if you need to do a video call.
If you need to refresh yourself before your flight, you can use one of the two shower suites.
The food and beverage options were great for a lounge. For breakfast, they served Western options, including bacon, roasted tomatoes, and sauteed mushrooms, and Asian options, including bee hoon, chicken congee, and dim sum. They also had a salad bar and bread station. For drinks, a barista would make your coffee. A good range of tea, beer, and wine were also available.
We then boarded the plane at 10:30. In this particular A380, business class is placed in the upper deck. In each row, the seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, providing aisle access to all passengers. The flight attendants were welcoming and friendly. For the welcome drink, I chose a glass of champagne. Instead of warm towels usually offered to passengers before the pandemic, they now distributed wet wipes. They also paid a good attention to our 5-yo daughter and gave her one of those famous SQ teddy bears. In fact, their services throughout the flight were very good.
The design of the seat is outstanding and certainly has been thought out well. The leathered seat can be reclined into a bed. The two middle seats in front of the business class cabin can actually be converted into a double bed. The seat is also very comfortable for seating and relaxing. It has plenty of compartments for your belongings and devices. The lighting is well placed, and its intensity can be adjusted depending on your needs. The only downside, and I am a bit nit picking here, is the relatively small footwell in comparison to the overall width of the seat.
The entertainment system is again outstanding. The 18” high-definition touchscreen monitor is large and coupled with the noise cancelling headphones, provide a great atmosphere for watching movies. The movie options are wide ranging, including Hollywood, Bollywood, Asian movies, animation, and many others.
The plane departed on time. Soon after the seatbelt sign was off, nuts and another round of drink were offered. I again chose a glass of champagne for my drink. The flight attendant also asked what I would like to order for lunch. The menu was already provided in one of the compartments. Of course, you also can use the Singapore Airlines’ Book the Cook optional service offered to passengers flying in Premium Economy, Business Class, First Class and Suites. With this service, you can pre-select your main meal. The options are impressive I must say. Below is the on-board menu with its extensive beverage selection.
For the entrée, we had prosciutto with melon, green olives, and lemon dressing. It is a good, light dish to begin with.
For the main, we all got a dish from the Book the Cook service. I chose seafood thermidor, which was decent, but not as delicious I expected. My wife got the salmon in wild lime butter sauce, which she seemed to enjoy. I also ordered my daughter roast chicken in wild mushroom cream. I gave this a try also since she could not finish it all, and it was tasty.
My dessert was panna cotta with vanilla sauce, which was enjoyable. They also gave me cheese and crackers and some fresh fruit. Overall, it was a great fine dining experience.
I spent the rest of the flights doing some work and watching movies. My daughter also managed to take a nap for a considerable amount of time.
Refreshment was served about 1 hour before landing. Both my wife and I ordered the soya sauce chicken noodle from the on-board menu, while I ordered a child’s menu for my daughter. The child’s menu was bread with chicken and cheese. It was surprisingly nice, despite its simple appearance.
Not long after, we landed smoothly in the Singapore Changi Airport. Excellent flying experience again with Singapore Airlines.
