Long review
Mercure Goulburn is tucked away in the edge of Goulburn, a regional city located about 200 kilometres south-west of Sydney. Goulburn had a population of more than 23,000 in 2018. My family and I arrived at the hotel by car. The first thing that I noticed was the country-style design of the lobby, which I like.
Check-in was quick and the receptionist was friendly and welcoming. It should be noted that no late check-out available because cleaning was outsourced, and they only did one cleaning every day at a specific time frame. I believe this is common for hotels located in regional towns. Since this hotel is only single-story property, where the rooms are placed around the car park, I could easily park my car in front of the room. Parking was free, which was expected.
The room is spacious, about 45m2, and was equipped with 1 queen bed and 1 single bed. The room looked new. I liked its simple and clean design. I loved the bedside lamps.
Other amenities in the room were an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer, and the usual tea and coffee making facilities. I appreciated the complementary 2 bottles of water, slippers and a small box of chocolate. Nothing to see from the window obviously since, as I mentioned earlier, the room is facing the car park.
The mattresses were too soft and bouncy for me since I prefer a firm mattress. The air conditioning and the thermal insulation, however, were excellent. The room was perfectly comfortable even though the temperature dropped below 0 in the morning. I could see that the windows are doubled glazed, a rarity in Australia. Well done.
The bathroom is fairly large and clean, but nothing to rave about. It was functional.
In the evening, we ordered 2 dishes from the room service menu by the Edge Restaurant. The first dish was egg and mushroom risotto and the second was eye fillet. Both were super delicious.
The breakfast area was nice and bright due to the floor-to-ceiling windows on 1 side of the wall. There were two options for breakfast: cooked or continental. My wife and I ordered the cooked option. The variety of the foods and drinks was standard, and the taste was ok. The mushroom was very nice though. We also could order egg dishes. The staff were very friendly and nice again. One of them even cut a few slices of watermelon specifically for our 16-month old daughter.
There were no other facilities available in the hotel, such as a gym or pool. Only 100 metres from the hotel, however, there is Big Merino, a giant 15-metre sheep statue. Built in 1985, it is a monument to Goulburn and the surrounding district’s fine wool industry. Next to the statue, there is a gift shop and an exhibition depicting the 200-year history of wool in Australia. Still around the hotel, there is the Trappers Bakery, an award-winning bakery. If you are around, you should give it a try. The centre of Goulburn is located about 4 to 5 km away from the hotel, so having a car is definitely a must.
Overall, we enjoyed our stayed there. We are thinking to go back there and explore the area more.
